Winter Love Island 2023 champions Kai and Sanam have candidly addressed their feelings of disappointment regarding the lack of work opportunities that have come their way after winning the show earlier this year. While previous winners of Love Island have often been showered with lucrative deals, endorsements, TV shows, podcasts, and magazine features, Kai and Sanam feel they have received relatively fewer opportunities.
In a recent discussion, the couple reflected on the fact that they have not been offered the same level of work as many of their predecessors. Past Love Island victors have enjoyed substantial six-figure deals with prominent brands, as well as securing their own television programs and collaborations with magazines. The post-show trajectory for Love Island contestants often revolves around becoming influencers and public figures, with the potential to amass significant wealth.
Addressing the disparity in opportunities, Kai began by explaining, “People have asked us, ‘why did you never get daytime TV when you came out the villa?’ ‘Why did you never do photoshoots in the tabloids?’ And the answer is we don’t know. We have no answer to that. We don’t really know why all previous Love Island winners before us, and after us, got opportunities.”
Expressing their perspective, Sanam noted that since their time on the show, their focus has been on nurturing their relationship and building a home together. Kai emphasised that this has been their primary focus and described it as “the most important thing to us.”
Kai clarified that when they participated in Love Island, their primary goal wasn’t to secure opportunities, but rather to find love – an objective they feel they have successfully achieved. “We’re really happy with that,” he expressed. However, they acknowledged that the other perks that typically accompany Love Island winners might not have aligned with their personality and approach. Kai noted that they don’t indulge in drama or engage in certain behaviours often associated with Love Island winners. He suggested, “Maybe that’s your answer, maybe it’s something else.”
The couple continued their discussion by emphasising the diversity they brought to the show. With Sanam being of Indian and Caribbean descent and Kai being of Jamaican and English heritage, they believe they represented a wide array of backgrounds and cultures. Kai highlighted, “We represent the diversity of the country here. I feel like that’s something to be celebrated.”
Sanam shared her belief that their unique backgrounds should have been highlighted more on the show and in its aftermath. However, she observed that the focus seemed to shift towards her status as the first girl from Casa Amor to win the show. Despite this, both Sanam and Kai recognise the broader significance of their presence on the show. “At the end of the day, I think what we believe in and who we are – we represent more than just that,” Sanam asserted. Kai concluded with pride, “We represent people from a minority being able to win one of the biggest shows in the UK, in the world.”
