ITV Love Island’s Maya Jama calls out Islander over ‘mean’ remark

Love Island, back for its 11th season, wasted no time stirring up drama. Presenter Maya Jama didn’t shy away from addressing a comment made by one of the Islanders that left the others taken aback.

Contestant Sean Stone made a remark during a challenge that many found “mean,” expressing his disappointment at being paired with Nicole Samuel. The uncomfortable exchange left Nicole feeling offended, with other contestants reacting with shock or nervous laughter. Maya promptly intervened, making it clear that Sean’s comment was uncalled for.

Maya initially asked the pair about their thoughts on being partnered up, and it was evident from their reactions that they weren’t thrilled. While Nicole chose to keep her responses private, Sean candidly stated that Nicole “wasn’t his usual type,” implying he found her less attractive. Responding to Maya’s question, Sean shared, “It’s early days. Not my usual type… but I’m looking forward to opening my ideas up and getting to know her.”

Maya quickly addressed Sean’s comment, remarking, “Ok… but you didn’t have to say that, but it’s ok. She kept her cards close, you just flung them out. But it’s ok.” Maya’s response resonated with viewers, many of whom criticised Sean’s remark as “mean” and unnecessary.

Later in a private chat, Sean clarified his comment to Nicole, explaining that he meant it in terms of his standard type or what he’s used to. Nicole, with her brown hair and blue eyes, questioned him further about his “standard type,” to which Sean admitted to preferring blondes. However, he expressed excitement about getting to know Nicole beyond appearances.

In a surprising twist, former The Only Way Is Essex star and I’m A Celebrity participant Joey Essex made a dramatic entrance as the new bombshell at the end of the episode, leaving the Islanders in shock just as the couples were starting to bond.
