Perrie Edwards announces she’s pregnant with rainbow baby

Perrie Edwards has announced that she is expecting her second child, sharing the joyful news with her fans after previously opening up about the heartbreak of suffering two miscarriages.

The 31-year-old singer, best known as a member of chart-topping girl group Little Mix, confirmed the pregnancy in a post on Instagram alongside her fiancé, footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The couple, who already share a son named Axel, welcomed their first child in 2021.

The announcement came with a simple but emotional caption: “Guess what hunnies…”, alongside a photo of Perrie cradling her baby bump. The couple were seen smiling in the image, with Alex holding her waist and Axel standing beside them.

The news comes months after Perrie opened up publicly about her experience of pregnancy loss, speaking candidly on the We Need To Talk podcast. During the interview, she revealed that her first pregnancy ended in miscarriage shortly after she discovered she was expecting.

“I had a miscarriage very early on with my first ever pregnancy,” she said. “I remember finding out I was pregnant [but] I started bleeding not long after, and I went to hospital and I had the scan and they were like, ‘There’s no baby.’”

The singer went on to describe a second, more traumatic loss that occurred after the birth of Axel. She revealed that she and Alex lost a baby at 24 weeks gestation following a devastating scan.

“We went for what was a 20-week scan, but we were actually 22 weeks, and that was just the worst day of my life. Like, horrendous,” Perrie said.

She recalled the moment she realised something was wrong. “I just knew something was wrong in the scan. I’ve never experienced an out-of-body experience where everything goes in slow motion.”

Perrie’s decision to share her story publicly was praised by fans and fellow celebrities, many of whom commended her bravery in speaking about a subject that remains difficult for many to discuss. The term “rainbow baby,” which Perrie has used to describe her son Axel, is commonly used to describe a child born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss — representing hope after a storm.

The couple’s announcement of a second pregnancy has been met with a wave of support across social media, with fans, friends, and former bandmates expressing their joy at the news.

Edwards and Oxlade-Chamberlain, 31, began dating in 2016 and got engaged in 2022. The former Liverpool midfielder, who now plays in Turkey for Beşiktaş, has frequently shared photos of their family life on social media, often praising Perrie’s role as a mother.

In recent months, Perrie has taken a step back from the spotlight, focusing on family and quietly working on solo music. Her debut solo material has yet to be released, but the singer has teased that a new chapter is coming soon. She remains one of the UK’s most recognisable pop stars following a decade of success with Little Mix, who went on hiatus in 2022.

Perrie’s candidness around her pregnancy losses adds to a growing number of public figures who have shared similar experiences. Stars including Meghan Markle, Chrissy Teigen, and Michelle Obama have spoken out in recent years in an effort to destigmatise miscarriage and create space for open dialogue.

Speaking on the We Need To Talk podcast, Perrie explained why she felt compelled to talk about what had happened. “I think it’s so important that people feel less alone. When it happened to me, I felt like nobody talked about it.”

She continued: “I didn’t realise how common it was. And then when I started talking about it with close friends or people around me, I was shocked by how many had gone through something similar.”

Now expecting her second child, Perrie’s announcement carries added meaning for fans aware of her previous struggles. The term “rainbow baby” has become a recurring theme for the singer, symbolising not only the birth of her son Axel but also the resilience she has shown throughout her journey.

Edwards and Oxlade-Chamberlain have not yet revealed how far along the pregnancy is or when their second child is due, but the announcement marks a moment of celebration and hope for the couple following a difficult period.

As one of the UK’s most prominent pop stars, Perrie’s decision to go public with both her grief and her joy has made a lasting impact. Her openness has helped others find comfort, and her latest news offers a powerful reminder of hope after loss.
