A video of a learner driver being told to continue driving at a red light has left not only the learner but also TikTok users baffled.
The video was shared by Clear View Driving, a driving school that teaches new drivers how to navigate through different driving scenarios.
The video showed learner Erin attempting to slow down her car as she approached a red light. However, her instructor urged her to keep driving. Erin seemed perplexed and asked, “But it’s a red light.” The instructor replied, “No, this red light doesn’t apply to you. But, I will get into that in a second.”
TikTok users who watched the video were equally confused as to why Erin shouldn’t have stopped.
One user who claimed to be an experienced driver commented, “I’m an experienced driver and that would confuse me a lot. I would like to know who that applies to.”
Another user who understood Erin’s confusion said, “I can understand why she thought that.” A third user pointed out that “the traffic light facing the car is confusing.”
The instructor went on to explain why Erin shouldn’t have stopped at the red light.
In an interview with the Sun Online, the instructor said, “In that clip, we were mid-turn when Erin noticed the red light. But the red light was not for us; it was for traffic that’s already on the main road; they were waiting in the distance outside the junction behind us.”
The instructor further explained that the red light was a repeater traffic light, which only applies to the traffic already facing that light.
“If there were traffic behind us as we stopped, then that would block the junction completely,” the instructor added. “The vehicles behind us could also get into a collision as they are not expecting to stop there. We should not stop at that point as there is no solid line as we are in the junction.”
Some TikTok users were able to figure out why the particular set of traffic lights didn’t apply to Erin. One user wrote, “Look at the rear-view mirror, it’s for the junction behind them.”
Another user suggested showing the footage of the driver moving off at the green light turning right and then commented, “WHY THE HELL ARE YOU STOPPING!”
