The British National Anthem will Change Following Queen’s Death

The British National Anthem lyrics will change following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Following her passing on 8 September, her son, the then Prince Charles, automatically became King Charles III.

As we now have a King instead of a Queen, the lyrics to “God Save the Queen” are now “God Save the King.”

Most of the lyrics of the National Anthem will remain the same, with just the pronouns changing from “Queen” to “King”.

The world has been shaken by Queen Elizabeth II’s death. She was the UK’s older reigning monarch and sat on the throne for 70 years.

She died at the age of 96, three years younger than her beloved husband, Prince Philip was when he passed in April 2021.

The British National Anthem was written in 1745 and was known as the UK’s national anthem at the start of the 19th century. “God Save the King” is actually the original title.

In 1952 when the Queen ascended to the throne after the death of her father King George VI, the lyrics were “God Save the King”.

Now that there is a new King on the throne, the lyrics will revert back to their original.

It is not actually known who composed the national anthem but in 1745 when it was first adopted as the national anthem, the lyrics were:

God save great George our king, God save our noble king, God save the king! Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the king!
