Meghan Markle Says She was Loner in School and “Ugly Duckling”

Meghan Markle has admitted she was a bit of a loner during her formative years, stating that she would often sit alone at school during lunch and that she was an “ugly duckling”.

As part of her newest venture, a podcast series called Archetypes, the Duchess of Sussex told comedian Mindy Kaling that she purposely took on extracurricular activities and hobbies to pass the time at school breaks.

The new series is described as ‘a podcast where we investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back.’

So far, the royal has introduced strong, empowered guests such as Mariah Carey, Serena Williams and now actress and comedian Mindy Kaling. Her aim to break down stigmas and stereotypes held against women.

The 41-year-old spoke about her “unconventional beauty” as a child, which shocked Kaling.

In episode three of the podcast, the mother of two spoke about the stigma attached to being a single woman.

The comedian said:

“I grew up always feeling ugly, overweight, ‘othered’, and so, with my daughter, I’m always telling her that she’s beautiful to the point where my friend BJ is like ‘You can tell her other compliments!'”.

The comedian then asked Markle “Were you not the pretty one growing up?” to which she replied:

“No, oh god no,”

“Ugly duckling.”

“I had massive frizzy curly hair and a huge gap in my teeth. I was the smart one – forever and ever and ever and ever. And then sort of grew up”.

The “Mindy Project” actress opened up about her struggles and challenges with being a single woman and how the decision to have a family on her own has impacted her life.
